I believe I did a blog on Spring time in the park and then summer and later fall and now that we are in the throes of winter, I need to jot down my sightings etc. of the winter scene in the park. Still lots of runners and walkers. They cannot be described as bundled up because Spandex is hardly bundling material. the ear warmers, black Spandex running pants, colorful sweat shirts and shoes of varius colors seem to be the uniform of the winter runners and hoofers. The golf course looked abandonned but the club house parking lot was full so I must assume the golfers are either waiting for a miracle of a sudden burst of warmth and sunshine or they just meet for coffee and play by play descriptions of their prowess on the links in the past.
The trees are so stark and lonely looking with all of the squirrel nests exposed and the only greenery around is the ocassional fir tree. Not too many bikers out because it was just too cold and blustery. The dogs running with their masters and mistresses seem very contented with their plight. Their visible breath made me wonder if I were not in my car if I sould be able to hear them wickering like horses do after they have run in the cold air.
As I was coming into the park on my way home, I saw a few police cars blocking the road with their lights flashing and as I got near I could see they were clearing the way for a funeral cortege that had entered the park from Cannons Ln. and proceeded past the "pick up" basketball court, the tennis courts and the playground and ball fields to take a right into Seneca Gardens on the way to the burial site. I was taking a left out of the Gardens so I was able to go on. How nice, a little cruise through the park on the way to the final resting place. It was quite a long cortege and I wondered who the honoree was. My brother, Joe, used to say, when he saw a long funeral procession ,"He was either someone important or a gangster."
An interesting slice of life to observe.
Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. Spring is really coming on soon, Winter is on the wane. The days are longer now and Easter is very early this year. March 21st I think. If Ash Wednesday is almost here that means that fat Tuesday or as the French say,Mardi-gras is in a few days. That is one of my favorite days of the year. We plan to celebrate with the King cake and other items connected with Mardi-gras. I must get my beads out and get ready! I'll write more after the day arrives and let you know if I got the baby in the cake!
There is a lot of political activity at this time so I thought I'd keep you up dated on the countdown: as of today there are 354 days to go till we elect a new president.
